What Is a Golf Ball Marker Divot Tool?

By Spencer Lanoue
July 24, 2025

A golf ball marker divot tool is one of the most essential yet frequently overlooked accessories you can carry in your bag. This simple gadget is your ticket to being a responsible, respected player who leaves the course in better condition than they found it. This guide will walk you through what this tool is, why it's a must-have, and exactly how to use it like a seasoned pro.

What Is a Golf Ball Marker Divot Tool?

At its core, this tool combines two simple but vital functions into one convenient package. It's often a small, metallic or plastic device with two prongs at one end and a flat, decorative (and often detachable) piece, usually held on by a magnet.

  • The Divot Tool: This is the part with the prongs. Its specific job is to repair the small indentation, or "pitch mark," your golf ball makes when it lands on the a green from a high-arcing shot.
  • The Ball Marker: This is the flat, coin-like disc. Its purpose is to mark the position of your ball on the putting green so you can lift it to clean it or get it out of the way of another player's putt, as required by the rules of golf.

Having both of these in one tool is simply a matter of convenience. You’re A LOT more likely to remember and use them if they’re tethered together and always in your pocket.

Why Is Repairing Pitch Marks So Important?

Walking onto a green that's pockmarked with old, unrepaired pitch marks is a frustrating sight for any golfer. It doesn't just look bad, it directly affects the game. Here's why taking a few seconds to fix your mark is considered fundamental golf etiquette.

1. It Preserves the Putting Surface

An unrepaired pitch mark creates a compacted, uneven depression on the green. A putt that rolls over this spot can easily be knocked offline. By repairing your mark, you’re ensuring a smoother, truer surface for the groups playing behind you. It’s a basic sign of respect for other players.

2. It Keeps the Green Healthy

When a ball crashes into the green, it forcefully compresses the soil and the grass roots underneath. If left alone, the grass in that spot can die, leaving a brown-ish scar that takes weeks to heal. However, a pitch mark that is repaired correctly within the first few minutes can recover almost completely in just 24 hours. Properly fixing a pitch mark doesn't just fill a hole, it aerates the compacted soil underneath, giving the roots room to breathe and heal.

3. It's Part of Being a Good Golfer

Being a good golfer isn't just about your score. It’s about how you carry yourself on the course. Taking care of the course is a shared responsibility, and properly using your divot tool is a powerful, non-verbal way of say saying, "I respect the game." It’s an unwritten rule that well-seasoned players follow without fail.

Anatomy of a Good Pitch Mark Repair (Step-by-Step)

There is a right way and a very wrong way to repair a pitch mark. doing it wrong can actually causemore harm than leaving it alone by tearing up the roots beneath the soil and kills more grass. Forget what you think you have seen before.. here is the definitive, pro-approved method that superintendents and Greens staff wish every golfer on the course knew how to do with precision just like you will shortly.

  1. Step 1: Get Down LOW To Examine The Impact Crater - Kneeling down, gently insert the prongs of your divot restoration tool into the turf at HIGH-SIDE rear of the wall behind the rear indentation of the crater impact mark. AVOID touching the actual depression itself -- for GODS'SAKES DON'T LIFT The SOIL!!!!! This is the single biggest Faux-Pas committed by inexperienced players that actually damages greens when attempting to make repairs. It severs roots. We NEVER pry or lift soil upwards!NEVER-EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. Step a2: Push In Instead -- Holding the tool upright, imagine making one full circle of LIGHT inward pushes toward the void - pushing the heaved up area inward. Using your body weight behind the tool, push inward. Do not PUSH too hard. Just light pressure. You will repeat these inward movements around all four corners/sides in a Clock Method similar to a Compass: 12oc... 3:00.. .6:00.. ..&9 O´CLOK -- Each time pushing INWARD to lightly push all the soil into a centralized area filling the voids made at impact from each direction. With four perfect inward maneuvers, your job here-is already nearly done, my Friend.
  3. Step 3: Tamp it down- GENTLY-- Now, with any residual bumpy or slightly uneven surface from your prior-move - all you MUST DO NOW IS just softly tamp downward ONCE against the filled - in areas with ONE LIGHT tap using your FLAT- sole blade putter, the bottom of yorour shoe or a knee for final "tamping", restoring the original level surface for putting perfection. One tamp. Job well-done!

What to Avoid at All Costs

  • DO NOT lift from the center: This is a classic mistake. Inserting your tool into the middle of the mark and prying upwards tears the roots and kills the grass, leaving a much bigger problem behind. All lifting action needs to stop yesterday!!!!
  • DO NOT pry or twist violently: The motion is a gentle *pushing*. AnY twisting will merely shred turf root structures- destroying sections beyond repair.Be gentle.

How to Use a Golf Ball Marker Correctly
