How to Hit a Golf Ball Further as You Get Older

By Spencer Lanoue

Watching your tee shots fall shorter than they used to can be one of the most frustrating parts of golf as you get older. But sacrificing distance is not a requirement of aging. With smarter strategies, a few key adjustments to your swing, and the right mindset, you can stop the distance decline and even start hitting the ball further. This guide will walk you through the real-world, practical steps you can take to rediscover your power, maintain your distance, and enjoy the game more than ever.

First, Understand Why Distance Sips Away

Before we get into the fixes, it helps to understand what's happening physiologically. As a coach, I see it every day: the root cause of lost distance isn't just about getting "weaker." The primary culprit is a gradual loss of mobility, especially in your thoracic spine (your mid-to-upper back) and hips. When you can't rotate as freely as you used to, your body's natural response is to shorten the backswing and use the arms more. This creates a steeper, more disconnected swing that relies on timing and strength rather than leverage and rotational speed - the true ingredients of power.

Think of your body as the engine of the golf swing. A limited turn is like trying to drive a car with the parking brake partially engaged. The engine is still working, but you're not getting nearly the same performance. The good news is that we don't have to turn back the clock, we just have to learn how to drive the car differently. The following adjustments are all designed to help you generate power by working with your body, not against it.

Rebuild Your Foundation: The "Senior-Smart" Setup

You can't build a powerful swing on a weak foundation. As our bodies change, our setup must change, too. What felt athletic at 30 can feel restrictive at 60. Here’s how to adjust your setup to maximize rotation and stability, which are the building blocks of distance.

Widen Your Stance

Go a little wider with your feet than you might think - just outside your shoulders is a great starting point, especially with the driver. A wider stance provides a more stable base. This stability is fundamental because it gives you something solid to rotate against and around. It prevents the dreaded "sway," where your body moves laterally instead of turning. When you sway, you lose all the built-up energy in your backswing.

Introduce a Subtle Spine Tilt

At address, feel a slight tilt in your spine away from the target. Your right shoulder should feel a bit lower than your left (for right-handed golfers). This pre-sets your body for a fuller turn. It makes it mechanically easier for your left shoulder to move down and under your chin on the backswing, helping you create a deeper, more powerful coil without putting undue stress on your lower back. It also encourages a shallower, more sweeping attack angle with the driver, which is exactly what you want for launching the ball high and far.

Master the Power Turn: Rotate, Don't Sway

The single biggest power-killer I see in my older students is the sway. I can't emphasize this enough. A sway away from the ball feels powerful, but it's a huge energy leak. Power comes from coiling and uncoiling - a rotation around a stable center. Imagine you're a spring: coiling up in the backswing and then releasing that energy through the ball.

Here’s a simple drill to feel the difference:

  • Take your address position without a club.
  • Place your golf bag (or a chair) just outside your right foot.
  • Make a practice backswing. Your goal is to make a full hip and shoulder turn without bumping into the bag.

If you sway, you'll hit it instantly. To avoid it, you'll be forced to rotate. Feel your right hip turn behind you while your weight transfers to the instep of your right foot. It should feel like you're loading into your right glute, not leaning over your right leg. This is the feeling of a true power turn.

Recapture Speed with Smart Practice, Not Harder Work

You don't need exhausting gym sessions to regain swing speed. You need to retrain your body and brain to move faster. Neuromuscular training is about teaching your muscles to fire in a quick, explosive sequence. Here are a couple of my favorite ways to do this without getting tired.

The "Whoosh" Drill

This is a classic for a reason. Grab a club, turn it upside down, and grip it just below the clubhead. Now, make five full-speed swings, focusing on creating the loudest "whoosh" sound you can. You want that sound to happen past where the ball would be, not before it. Because the club is so light, your body has no fear of impact and is free to move at maximum speed. This trains your fast-twitch muscle fibers to fire aggressively and teaches your brain what an unrestrained, athletic motion feels like again.

Swing Lighter, Not Heavier

While strength training has its place, sheer speed comes from an "over-speed" protocol. You can get specific training aids for this (like the popular weighted sticks), but even just swinging your most lightweight club, like your driver, as fast as you can for short bursts can help reprogram your speed potential. The key is intent. Make 10 hard swings with the absolute intention of swinging as fast as you can. Rest for a minute, then repeat. This isn't about endurance, it's about explosiveness.

Let Technology Be Your Best Friend

Trying to fight Father Time with ill-fitting equipment is a losing battle. The best golfer in the world would lose distance with the wrong clubs. This is the lowest-hanging fruit for gaining yardage, and it's where you should absolutely invest if you're serious about getting longer.

  • Get Fit for the Right Shaft: This is non-negotiable. As your swing speed naturally decreases, a stiff or extra-stiff shaft won't load properly. It will feel like you're swinging a board. Moving to a Regular or Senior flex shaft allows the shaft to kick or "whip" through impact, generating extra clubhead speed that you aren't creating on your own. It's free distance.
  • Increase Your Driver Loft: The low-lofting drivers that pros use are designed for swing speeds well over 100 mph. For moderate swing speeds, a lower loft (like 8 or 9 degrees) won't keep the ball in the air long enough to maximize carry distance. Don't be afraid to go up to 10.5, 12, or even 13 degrees of loft. A higher loft gives you a higher launch and is often more forgiving on mishits, helping you carry the ball further.
  • Use a Low-Compression Golf Ball: Golf balls are designed for different swing speeds. A high-compression ball (like a Pro V1x) requires a massive amount of force to compress properly against the face. For slower swing speeds, a low-compression ball will feel softer and rebound more effectively off the face, translating directly into more ball speed and distance.

Simple Swing Keys for an Effortless Power Boost

Finally, let's layer in a couple of simple swing thoughts that make a huge difference in facilitating a powerful turn, especially for golfers with mobility limitations.

Flaring Your Lead Foot

This is one of the easiest and most effective adjustments you can make. At address, simply turn your left foot (for right-handers) out towards the target about 20-30 degrees. This simple move "pre-opens" your left hip. The benefit comes on the downswing, with that hip already open, your body has a much easier and longer path to rotate fully through the shot. It reduces restriction and allows you to deliver the clubhead with immense speed, without feeling like you're straining your back or hips.

Focus on Tempo and Sequence

Most amateur golfers, especially when trying to create power, rush the swing from the top. They use their arms and shoulders first, which completely breaks the kinetic chain. The proper downswing sequence for power is: hips -> torso -> arms -> club. To feel this, practice this simple sequence: From the top of your backswing, your very first thought should be to shift a little pressure to your front foot and begin unwinding your hips. Let the arms just "come along for the ride." When you let the big muscles lead the way, the speed will happen naturally and effortlessly at the bottom of the swing, right where it counts.

Final Thoughts

Adding distance as you get older isn't about one magic move, but rather a series of smart, connected adjustments. By optimizing your setup, focusing on a proper body turn, using technology to your advantage, and training for speed, you give yourself the best possible chance to unleash your true power potential.
