Why I Love Golf

By Spencer Lanoue

It’s a question I get a lot, both as a coach and a player: Why do you love golf so much? The simple answer is that nothing else feels quite like a purely struck golf shot. But the real reasons run much deeper than that fantastic feeling. This article unpacks the layers of why this game is so captivating, from the satisfaction of a well-executed swing to the mental escape it provides a few times a week.

There's Nothing Like the Feeling of a Pure Shot

If you've played even a little, you know the feeling. It's that moment when the club head meets the ball perfectly. There’s no clunky vibration up your arms, just a quiet, powerful *thwack* as the ball compresses and launches into the air exactly as you pictured it. For a few seconds, it hangs against the sky before dropping softly near your target. This single moment of perfection is a powerful hook that keeps us all coming back, no matter how the rest of the round is going.

But that feeling isn't some random accident. It’s what happens when your body and the club work in harmony. As a coach, I've seen countless golfers get bogged down in complicated mechanics. The truth is, the most effective golf swing is built on a simple idea: it's a rotational action. The club moves in a circle-like path around your body, powered primarily by the turning of your torso and hips. When you grasp this concept - that the swing is more around you than up and down - you're on your way to experiencing that pure strike more often.

The Joy of the Process: A Lifelong Challenge

One of the profound truths about golf is that you can never master it, but you can always get better. This endless pursuit of improvement is a huge part of its appeal for me. Every range session and every round is a new opportunity to learn something about your swing, your strategy, or your mental game. The path to improvement starts with building a solid foundation, which feels incredible once the pieces begin to click.

If you're ready to find more joy in your own process, let's look at the core components of a solid golf swing.

It All Starts in Your Hands: Nailing the Grip

Your connection to the club - the grip - is the steering wheel for your golf shots. It has a massive influence on where the clubface points at impact. An improper hold will force you to make all sorts of compensations in your swing just to get the ball to fly straight. Here’s a simple way to build a neutral, effective grip:

  • Square the Clubface: Before you even place your hands, make sure the leading edge of the clubface is perfectly straight, pointing at your target. Many grips have a logo on top you can use as a guide.
  • Set Your Lead Hand (Left Hand for Righties): Bring your hand to the side of the grip. The key is to hold the club primarily in your fingers, from the base of your little finger to the middle of your index finger. Once your fingers are on, place the pad of your hand on top. When you look down, you should be able to see two knuckles on your lead hand. The "V" formed by your thumb and index finger should point toward your trail shoulder (your right shoulder for a righty).
  • Add Your Trail Hand (Right Hand for Righties): The palm of your trail hand should fit neatly over the thumb of your lead hand. Like with the first hand, grasp the club in your fingers. The "V" on this hand should also point roughly toward your trail shoulder.

Don't be discouraged if this feels strange at first. A proper golf grip doesn’t feel like holding anything else. Interlock, overlap, or ten-finger - choose whichever feels most comfortable and stable. A solid grip is your first step toward consistency.

Building Your Foundation: An Athletic Setup

Your setup determines your consistency and your ability to generate power. Just like the grip, it feels unusual at first because we don't stand like this in any other part of life. But a good setup puts you in an athletic position, ready to move.

Start with the clubhead on the ground behind the ball, aimed at your target. From there, hinge at your hips, pushing your backside out as if you were about to sit in a high chair. Let your arms hang naturally from your shoulders, they shouldn't be tense or reaching. For your stance, set your feet about shoulder-width apart for a mid-iron. This provides a stable base that still allows your hips to turn freely. Your weight should be balanced 50/50 between both feet. When you feel grounded and athletic, you're ready.

From Takeaway to Top: Powering the Backswing

This is where you store your power. From your athletic setup, the backswing should feel like a simple rotation. You want to turn your chest and hips away from the target, staying centered over the ball. Think of yourself standing inside a cylinder, you want to rotate inside it, not sway from side to side.

An a simple move that helps almost every golfer is to introduce a little wrist hinge early in the backswing. As you start turning your body away from the ball, let your lead wrist hinge a bit. This action helps set the club on the right path and prepares it for a powerful release. You only need to rotate as far as your flexibility allows. A shorter, controlled turn is far better than a long, unstable one.

The Payoff: Creating a Powerful Downswing and Impact

You’ve moved to the top of your swing in a strong, rotated position. Now it's time to deliver that power to the ball. The perfect downswing sequence happens in a flash, but it has a couple of distinct parts. It all starts from the ground up. As you transition from backswing to downswing, your first move is a slight shift of your weight onto your front foot. This shift helps ensure you strike the ball first, then the turf. This is what creates that crisp contact and satisfying divot after the ball.

Once your weight starts its shift forward, simply unwind your lower body and torso as fast as you comfortably can. A common mistake is trying to "lift" the ball into the air by leaning back. Trust the loft on the club to do its job! Your task is to shift forward and rotate through, allowing the club's energy to be released at the bottom of the swing arc.

More Than a Sport: It's a Mental Reset

For me, a round of golf is a four-hour vacation for the mind. On the course, life’s other stresses have to take a back seat. You simply can't worry about work emails or your to-do list when you’re figuring out yardage, wind, and the break of a putt. The game demands your full presence, and that forced focus is a form of meditation. Walking through beautifully maintained landscapes, hearing the birds, and feeling the sun on your back adds to that feeling of escape.

This mental side extends to playing smarter, not just better. It's about course management - knowing when to be aggressive and when to play the high-percentage shot. Instead of getting frustrated after a bad shot, I love the challenge of figuring out the smartest way to recover. Reducing the emotional highs and lows and simply focusing on the next shot brings a tremendous sense of calm and control to the game.

A Game That Connects Us

Finally, I love golf for the people. It’s a rare sport where players of wildly different skill levels, ages, and backgrounds can spend hours together on a level playing field. Whether it’s a friendly weekly game with friends, a round with your father or daughter, or just getting paired with someone new, the shared experience forges a unique bond. You celebrate each other’s good shots, console each other after the bad ones, and share stories along the way. Some of my best memories have nothing to do with my score and everything to do with who I was with on the course.

Final Thoughts.

My love for golf is a mix of the physical sensation of a pured shot, the mental satisfaction of the constant challenge, and the simple joy of sharing an afternoon walk with people I enjoy. It's a deeply rewarding game that offers something new every time you tee it up.
